Bârlad is a city in Vaslui County, in the North-Eastern part of Romania, near the border with the Republic of Moldova, which registers the lowest GDP/inhabitant in the country. It is the largest municipality in terms of population from Vaslui county, although in decline by 8% in 2020 compared to 2010 due to migration.
There are 6 Roma communities, located in Bârlad, Munteni and Podeni (95% of the community is Rudari and 5% Căldărași) .
Since 2015, 300 Roma people left the community while 1200 are involved in circulatory migration.
The main issues the communities are faced with are the poor infrastructure; illegal housing and the legal impossibility of connecting to utilities; overcrowded housing; lack of education and employment; the lack of jobs; and early marriages among the Căldărași Roma.
