Vulcan municipality is located in the southern part of Hunedoara County, in Jiu Valley.
The main economic activity is mining. According to the census conducted in 2011, Vulcan city population numbers 24.160 inhabitants, most of them being Romanian (87.96%). The main minorities are the Hungarians (4.78%) and Roma (1.33%).

There are 3 Roma communities in the Municipality of Vulcan: Colonie, Crividia and Dallas. All communities face problems of infrastructure, unemployment and health. There is no health or school mediator. A local expert on Roma issues is employed in Vulcan city hall.

The most important issue and need of the community is related to the infrastructure, roads need to be repaired - when the weather is bad there is a lot of mud. Community is connected to water and electricity but it is not connected to sewage. The second issue is related to employment. Just a few people from the community have jobs, most of them depend to social welfare and additional income is made by collecting and selling coal collected from carriage.
