On the occasion of the European Week of Regions and Cities in Brussels, a workshop on " Building capacity for Roma inclusion at local level" was organised with ROMACT contribution on 11 October.
Roma inclusion is an EU priority translated into national strategies. In many municipalities however the lack of political will and administrative capacity hinders progress in improving the living conditions of Roma. In this workshop Bulgarian (Stancho Stavrev, Deputy - Mayor of Tundzha) and Romanian ( Adrian-Ovidiu Teban, Mayor of Cugir) Mayors and experts explained how they overcame these barriers with the support of the ROMACT programme. They also told how they learned to work together with local Roma to design, fund and implement policies that are inclusive of all. They highlighted how they successfully combined local resources with national and EU funding. Local Roma citizens also brought testimonies.
